The Anglican Church was first invited to Addis Ababa in the early 1920s. From small beginnings in the compound of the British Legation, the congregation grew and moved to larger premises, first in a hotel and then in a school. Finally St. Matthew’s Church was built in 1954 on land given by Emperor Haile Selassie. Today St. Matthew’s Church provides Anglican worship and ministry to a very diverse international community.
Today, on an average Sunday, it is common to have well over 20 nationalities at the main Sunday service, from all over Africa, from India, Australia, Europe and America. Because the African Union and the Economic Commission for Africa are both based in Addis, all African countries are represented in the city and in many of those countries there are large Anglican Churches. In addition, there are a number of Somali and Sudanese refugees who worship with us. |
|
We feel it is fitting in such an ancient Christian country as Ethiopia that the congregation at St. Matthew's is largely African, from many countries and cultures.
For many years, St. Matthew’s has enjoyed the company of members of many other Christian denominations, including Anglicans, Baptists, Methodists, Reformed, Catholics, Orthodox and Mennonites at our Sunday services and other activities. They are a valued part of our congregation; we believe that their presence enriches all our Christian lives. For times of services, click on Worship in the menu on the left.
