NONE OF THIS COMES FOR FREE...

It costs a great deal to run a busy city-centre Church like St Matthew's. We work hard to raise money, from both the St. Matthew’s congregation and from former members and friends worldwide, to fund the ministry programmes and church-based projects here and elsewhere in Ethiopia. We believe that St. Matthew’s, as an international Church, should be self-supporting, but we are only just covering our costs at present, as the following figures for 2007 demonstrate:

Income from all sources:
Sunday offerings, miscellaneous sales and donations from outside the country
(excluding income for specific projects):
470,202 Birr
Expenditure:
Including the Chaplain’s stipend, staff costs, church running costs and mission contribution to the diocese
(excluding expenditure for specific projects):
433,468 Birr
(note approx. exchange rates UKŁ1 = US$2 = 18.5 Birr)

As a result of high inflation, expenditure in 2008 is estimated to rise steeply to around 550,000 Birr. This means we need approximately 11,000 Birr a week in Sunday collections and free will offerings to run St. Matthew’s Church. If we had more, we could expand the Breakfast Club and/or take on more projects to help those in greatest need.

The income and expenditure figures given above exclude several on-going outreach and service to the community projects, for which we raise funds separately, such as:
  • the Breakfast Club - 5,000 Birr per month for 40 children (= UKŁ270 or US$540 per month)
  • the Hardship Fund - typically 500 to 1,000 Birr per month (= UKŁ30-60 or US$60-120 per month)
  • the Somali Fellowship - about 4500 Birr per month (including support for two evangelists) (= UKŁ250 or US$500 per month)
  • mini-scholarships for Library children, for Summer Schools & extra tuition - 100,000 Birr per year (= UKŁ5,400 or US$11,000 per year)
  • contributions to the cost of the Addis Food Run

Please think and pray carefully about what God is asking you to give, either as a one-off donation or regularly by standing order, to the mission and ministry of His Kingdom, through St. Matthew's.
